It is in 3 pieces, the wings part and the round part. Each has a screwback with flower-shaped nuts, and the round part is held onto the wings part when the top nut is tightened. Wings are silver colored metal, round part is brass with white and blue enamel.

When worn on the epaulets of the uniform the rank insignia are accompanied by an eagle on an aircraft engine with propellor. I paired one the 2nd Lt bars with the eagle insignia for the attached photo. This is how the rank insignia would have been worn on the uniform. - Bob Baldwin
