Italian Air Force - Duty Wings
Wing Insignia For Specialty
And Duty Categories
"Distintivi Di Categoria E'Specialita"

Click on the images to see a larger version and the back of the wing/badge
These first came into use, in very limited quantities, in 1923 and continued to slightly change with new duty categories and air specialities being introduced as the Royal Aereonautica evolved from 1923-1946 with the last changes in 1952.

Depending on the uniform, the category-specialty insignia was worn both as a wing over the left breast pocket above the ribbons, or just as the single round device up on the shoulder board with various uniforms of the day, so both types exist.

Most of these were never marked with a maker but occasionally you find one marked "Bomisa-Milano" or some other simple hallmark. All are pinback with the same style of pins used on the pilot wings.

Manufacturers, as with the pilot wings, used a variety of styles and material in construction. Some are plain, almost art decoish, others show fine feathering details. Still others are pierced while others are solid on a blue background. Also, the insignia device itself shows many variations in styles and that's what makes these so much fun and very interesting - Rudy D'Angelo

Here they used the last name of Guglielmo Marconi, who invented the Wireless, for the title, but this cannot be correctly translated into English, so the term "Wireless Operator" is used. This variation has both the Royal Crown and Fascio
