The Latvian Aviation Regiment was established in 1919 out of native Latvian pilots who were part of the Russian Imperial Air Force. Once a peace between Latvia and the Soviet Union was signed in 1920, the independent Latvian air forces continued until overrun by the Soviet Union at the start of the second world war. Latvian pilots continued to fly with the German Luftwaffe ex-patria, wearing Luftwaffe uniforms with a combination of German and Lativian pilot insignias. The Latvian Aviation Regiment (also referred to as the air division) was the primary military aviation force. Active members wore a distinctive flying badge surmounted by the Latvian fire cross, or ugunskrusts, connected to a chain holding a hovering eagle. The badge was in gold for officers, silver for NCOs.
